Job Summary
AECOM has an immediate opening for a Heavy Equipment Mechanic w/CDL in Department DS/GS Ft. Polk, LA.

The Heavy Equipment Mechanic performs a variety of repairs and services to maintain heavy equipment.  These duties require an understanding of intermediate heavy equipment maintenance.  

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Operates and inspects machines or equipment to diagnose defects
  • Dismantles and reassembles equipment, using Technical Manuals, lifting devices, hand and pneumatic tools
  • Examines parts for damage or excessive wear, using micrometers and gauges
  • Replaces defective engines and subassemblies, such as transmissions, and tests overhauled equipment to insure operating efficiency
  • Welds broken parts and structural members
  • Performs all work in accordance to the applicable Technical Manual for the vehicle and work assigned.
  • May direct workers engaged in cleaning parts and assisting with assembly and disassembly of equipment.
  • May recommend revision to internal maintenance procedures to improve efficiency and ensure quality workmanship within Army regulations.
  • Must be able recognize and know proper usage of a variety of tools.
  • Performs all other position related duties as assigned or requested.
Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands:
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs with or without accommodation.
  • Must utilize all proper lifting procedures and practices.
  • Must wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Must be able to work at heights.
  • Must be able to climb in and out of vehicles of various sizes and heights
  • Must be able to work under pressure and strenuous conditions.
  • Must be able to meet short suspense dates.
  • Must be able to conduct work in the out-of-doors area with potential exposure to extreme climatic conditions (i.e. extreme temperatures, high humidity, rain and blowing dust).
  • Must be able to withstand prolonged periods of stooping; climbing; standing; and sitting for long periods of uninterrupted time.
  • May require shift work.
  • May be required to work an uncommon tour of duty including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • During the usual work period, the worker may be exposed to sounds and noise levels that are distracting and uncomfortable.

Minimum Requirements
  1. Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Legal Resident
  2. High school diploma or equivalent.
  3. Eight (8) or more years’ recent experience and specific knowledge in heavy machinery/vehicle maintenance through verifiable on the job experience to include 5 years recent experience in the field consistent with the requirements set forth in the contract (military vehicles).
  4. Must know theory and principles of engine operations and accessories and components.
  5. Must have or be able to obtain site forklift and other licenses/certifications as needed to perform duties.
  6. Must have a valid and current state class A driver’s license.
  7. Must hold a Class A CDL and maintain during employment. Those without a current CDL A may be allowed to obtain within 90 days of start of employment.
  8. Must be able to operate a government general-purpose vehicle
  9. Must be able to inspect, repair, and operate a diverse range of vehicles
  10. Must be able to complete paperwork associated with vehicle maintenance and repairs.
  11. Must be able to manipulate and use hand tools and hydraulic equipment
  12. Must possess knowledge and proper use of special tools/equipment required to perform assigned maintenance tasks.
  13. Must possess basic computer skills.
  14. Must have the ability to read, interpret, and apply Technical Manual instructions, publications, and safety rules.
  15. Must be able to read, interpret and use vehicle maintenance manuals, service bulletins, wiring/schematic diagrams, data tables and other specifications to determine feasibility and method to repair or replace malfunctioning or damaged components.
  16. Must have the ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  17. Position may require the ability to pass and maintain a Security Clearance.
  18. Position may require travel.
  19. Must be able to meet physical requirements associated with and/or pass any medical examination requirements related to performing daily assigned tasks or required licenses/certifications
  20. Ability to work in a team environment


Preferred Qualifications
  • Maintenance knowledge on MAXXPROs or MAXXPRO schooling a plus.
  • Maintenance and repair of military tactical vehicles, as well as, lawn mower (push, riding, zero turn), ATV, side by side, HMMWV, light wheeled trailers, LMTV, FMTV, medium wheeled trailers, HEMMIT, HET, heavy wheeled trailer, forklift, M88, M113, construction equipment, and emergency vehicles.
  • Previous leadership experience.
  • ASE and/or Diesel Mechanic Certifications.
  • Experience in field repairs and recovery.
